Library data updated BeginnerBodyweight

What this page is: structured data from Handler's own exercise library — the same cues, mistakes, ranges, and modifications the coach uses in the app. It is general exercise information, not an individual technique assessment or medical advice. Stop any movement that causes pain and seek qualified coaching or clinical care for injuries.

Technique

Form cues for the plank

  1. 01

Create a straight line from your head to your heels — no sagging or piking.

  2. 02

Squeeze your glutes and brace your abs as if someone is about to push you.

  3. 03

Keep your neck neutral by looking at a spot on the floor between your hands.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

  • Hips sagging toward the floor.

  • Hiking the hips too high into a pike position.

  • Holding breath instead of breathing steadily.

Programming defaults

Sets, seconds, and rest by goal

These are the starting ranges Handler's library assigns to the plank for each training goal. They are defaults the coach adjusts from your logged sets, not a prescription for any individual.

GoalSets × secondsRest between sets
Strength3 × 30–60 s1 min
Hypertrophy3 × 30–45 s1 min
Fat loss3 × 30–60 s30 s
General fitness3 × 20–45 s45 s

Between sets

  • Lie face down and let your back relax for a moment before the next hold.
  • Focus on where you first lost form in the last set and try to extend that point.

Working around discomfort

Modifications by body area

How Handler adjusts the plank when a lifter reports a sensitive area. These are training modifications, not treatment. Pain that persists or worsens needs clinical assessment.

Shoulder
Perform on forearms instead of hands to reduce shoulder load.
Lower back
Reduce hold time and focus on posterior pelvic tilt.

Questions about this exercise

What muscles does the plank work?
The plank primarily works the core and rectus abdominis. The obliques, shoulders and glutes work as secondary or stabilising muscles. In Handler's library it is classified as a core movement.
What equipment do you need for the plank?
None. The plank is a bodyweight exercise, which is why it appears in Handler's anywhere setups.
How many sets and seconds of the plank should I do?
Handler's default for a strength focus is 3 × 30–60 s with about 1 min rest, and for a muscle-building focus 3 × 30–45 s with about 1 min rest. These are the library's starting ranges, not an individual prescription; the coach adjusts them from what you log.
Is the plank suitable for beginners?
Yes. It is tagged beginner in Handler's library. When it feels easy, the next step in the progression chain is the hanging leg raise.
