What is Handler?
Handler is an AI personal trainer app for strength training, on iPhone and Android. It builds a four-week plan around your goals, schedule and equipment, guides and logs every set, shows video demos for 431 exercises, and adapts the session when your day changes: how you feel before you train, how the last set felt, a taken rack or less time than you planned. You can text or call your coach in the style you pick, and track your strength muscle by muscle. It's listed on the App Store as Handler: Gym & Strength Coach, from Vinebranch Labs. Handler Pro is required after onboarding.

Who it's for
Handler fits if
- You lift in a gym and want a plan written for you, four weeks at a time, around your goals, schedule and equipment.
- You want the session to bend: a new target for the sets you have left after set two, a swap when the rack is taken, a 7, 10 or 15-minute fallback.
- You like being coached in words, in chat or on a Pro voice call, and you want to pick the tone, from Chill to Savage.
Look elsewhere if
- You already run your own program and want a free log for it. Hevy or Strong cost less.
- You want to log sets from your wrist. Strong and Hevy have Apple Watch apps.
- You train with no signal and need logging that is proven to work offline. Offline status explains what we haven't tested.
- You want a named program like 5/3/1 or GZCLP. Boostcamp has a program library.
What it does
The linked pages go into the detail, and the help articles give the taps.
Example
Squat, 3 × 5 at 100 kg. Set two felt Too Easy, so Handler suggests 102.5 kg for the sets you have left.
- Four-week strength plan
Handler builds a four-week strength plan around your goals, schedule, equipment and training history.
- Workout logging
Log the weight and reps you actually lift. Handler fills your numbers into the sets that follow, runs your rest timers, handles supersets and plate maths, and saves progress as you go.
- Exercise video demos
Video demos for 431 exercises, with female demos for selected exercises.
- Daily check-in
Before you train, tell Handler how you feel: Fresh, Sore, Low Energy or Something Hurts. It can shorten today's session, ease the work for sore muscles, or suggest recovery instead.
- Effort Check
After your second working set of an exercise, Effort Check asks how it felt — Too Easy, Solid, Hard But Good or Maxed Out — and suggests a new target for the sets you have left.
- Busy equipment swaps
If the rack or bench is taken, mark it busy. At a saved location, Handler automatically replaces exercises you haven't started with ones that keep the same movement pattern. Started exercises stay as they are.
- Quick Gym
Short on time? Quick Gym gives you a 7, 10 or 15-minute workout: pick Large Gym, Small Gym, Home Gym, Hotel or Bodyweight. Mid-workout, ask Coach to fit the rest into the time you have left; it keeps completed working sets and trims what's left.
- Something feels off
If something feels off mid-workout, tell Handler where and how it feels. It can keep you going carefully, lower the remaining targets, or swap the exercise. It does not diagnose or treat pain.
- Coach chat
Ask your coach about your training at any time. It knows your plan, your history and today's workout, and can move a missed session, fit the rest of a workout into the time you have, or rebuild your week once you confirm.
- Coach styles and voice calls
Pick a coach style — Chill, Hype, Direct or Savage — and a coach, Marcus or Sarah. With Pro you can call your coach for a two-way voice conversation with captions.
- Strength Rank and Strength Map
Track your logged strength through rank tiers and a muscle-level Strength Map.
- Progress and history
See your workouts, personal records and weekly reports by week, month or all time, and share a workout, a PR or your rank as a card.
Limits
- Handler Pro is required after onboarding. There is no free version.
- There is no Apple Watch app yet. It's in development.
- Offline logging hasn't been independently tested; coach chat and calls need a connection.
- Handler can't see the gym floor. Equipment status is whatever you mark.
- It's training guidance, not medical care. It doesn't diagnose pain.

How it differs from Fitbod, Alpha Progression and Hevy
Fitbod writes each workout fresh. Alpha Progression runs a structured plan and moves your targets from logged history. Hevy is a log first, with planning in Pro. Handler writes a four-week plan and helps you change today's session as it goes. US prices checked on October 30, 2026, from each app's own pages or US App Store listing.
| App | Built around | Worth knowing | US price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitbod | Builds each workout from your equipment, recent training and muscle recovery. | Replace an exercise: swipe left, tap Replace. | $15.99/month or $95.99/year, 7-day trial. |
| Alpha Progression | Structured plans, with Pro weight and rep recommendations once an exercise has history. | Replace an exercise for today only or for the plan going forward. | Free logger. Pro $12.99/month or $79.99/year; 14-day trial on yearly. |
| Hevy | A log for routines you build. Pro adds Trainer, which plans and adjusts working weights. | Free version: up to 4 routines. | Pro $2.99/month, $23.99/year or $74.99 lifetime. |
| Handler (ours) | A four-week strength plan from your goals, schedule, equipment and history. | Effort Check after set two suggests a new target for the sets you have left; mark equipment busy for a same-pattern swap. | $79.99/year, 7-day trial on iOS for eligible new subscribers; monthly in the app. |
- Fitbod if you want every workout generated around today's equipment.
- Alpha Progression if you want a structured hypertrophy plan with targets that move from your logged sets.
- Hevy if you mainly want a cheap or free log for a program you already run.
