Coach styles

An AI coach with a personality, from Chill to Savage

Short answer

Handler lets you choose how your coach talks: Chill, Hype, Direct or Savage, with Marcus or Sarah as your coach. Savage is the strict end, which the app sums up as “Brutal, uncensored tough love.” Your coach style changes the words, not your plan or the safety rules. With Pro you can also call your coach for a two-way voice conversation with captions.

Step by step

How it works in Handler

  1. 01

    Pick a coach style

During setup, choose Chill, Hype, Direct or Savage. Each one shows a one-line description and a preview line, so you know what you're signing up for. Savage carries an explicit-content warning in onboarding.

  2. 02

    Pick your coach

Choose Marcus or Sarah. Coach and coach style are separate choices, so a calm Sarah or a savage Marcus are both on the table.

  3. 03

    Change it any time

Both live in Settings under Trainer preference, where the app calls the coach style Coach Mode. Tap Save changes.

  4. 04

Hear it wherever the coach talks

Your coach style carries into coach chat, workout feedback, briefings and debriefs, and voice calls.

  5. 05

    Call your coach

With Pro, open Coach chat, tap the phone button, then tap Start voice call. Your coach answers out loud, with captions.

  6. 06

    Share a Savage line

On a Savage call, Share sends an eligible Coach quote as text.

Strict, tough love, roast

How harsh is Savage?

Savage is Handler's tough-love coach style. The app describes it as “Brutal, uncensored tough love.” It is a strict roast in the words your coach uses, and it can roast skipped sessions. A pain or injury report turns the roast off; see the limits below. If you want the opposite, pick Chill; Direct gives you the numbers straight, without the roast.

Voice calls

Can I talk to my coach?

Yes, with Handler Pro. The call is separate from chat, and you start it, for example between sets to ask about a swap or how to fit the time you have left. Your coach answers out loud with captions on screen, and your chat messages aren't read aloud. Your coach style comes along, so a Savage call sounds like Savage. Call length and consent are in the limits below.

Limits

What a coach style won't change

  • Coach style changes wording only. Your plan, targets, Effort Check suggestions and safety rules are the same in every style.
  • Savage can roast skipped sessions; it drops the roasting when you report pain or an injury.
  • Voice calls need Handler Pro and current consent to AI processing. Each call stops at 10 minutes and ends if you leave the app.
  • Chat messages aren't read aloud, and a call doesn't talk you through every rep. Voice is a separate call you start.
  • Share appears only during a Savage call. It sends an eligible Coach line as text, not audio, and ending the call hides it.
  • Your coach can't watch your form. It works from what you log and what you tell it.

Other ways to do this

Other ways to get pushed

How you like to be coached is personal. A few other options:

CARROT Fit

Its App Store listing describes a snarky, sadistic AI that threatens, ridicules and bribes you through a 7-minute interval routine it calls “7 Minutes in Hell.” Good for a laugh; it's a short circuit, not a gym strength plan.

Ray

Ray's homepage says it coaches you out loud and talks with you while you train, and a Tom's Guide review describes four voices to pick from, including one called Bold. Pick it if you want a voice with you through the whole session; Handler's voice is a short call you start.

A training partner

A friend who knows when to push and when to back off is hard to beat, and they can spot you on the bench.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a workout app that roasts you?

Yes. Handler's Savage coach style is tough love in words, in chat, workout feedback and voice calls. It carries an explicit-content warning in onboarding, and you can pick it during setup or in Settings under Trainer preference.

Is this the app that yells at me?

No. Savage is a blunt roast in the words. It does not yell, and it is not a drill sergeant. It can roast skipped sessions, but not once you report pain or an injury. Handler's coach talks in chat, workout feedback and voice calls you start.

Can I talk to my AI coach?

Yes, with Handler Pro. Open Coach chat, tap the phone button, then tap Start voice call; your coach answers out loud, with captions. It's a two-way voice call of up to 10 minutes, and it needs your consent to AI processing. It ends if you leave the app, and your chosen coach style comes along on the call.

Can I switch coach or coach style later?

Yes. Change the coach style, or switch between Marcus and Sarah, in Settings under Trainer preference. Coach and coach style are separate choices, so a calm Sarah or a savage Marcus are both options. The change applies from then on. If the roast stops working for you, switch to Direct or Chill.
