AI coach and plan

AI personal trainer that plans your training and talks to you

Short answer

Handler is an AI personal trainer app for lifting. It writes a four-week strength plan from your goals, experience, schedule, equipment and training history. In the gym you log your sets, and Coach works from what you log: ask it in chat to move a workout, trim today's session to fit, or rebuild the rest of your week. With Pro you can call your coach and talk it through, with captions.

Step by step

How it works in Handler

  1. 01

    Answer the setup questions

Your goals, how long you've been lifting, the days you can train and the equipment you have. Pick a coach style and a coach while you're there.

  2. 02

    Get your four-week plan

Handler builds it from those answers and any training you've logged. Each workout lists its exercises with sets, reps and rest.

  3. 03

    Train and log

Tick off each set. After your second working set of an exercise, Effort Check asks how it felt and can suggest a new target for the sets you have left.

  4. 04

    Tell Coach what changed

Missed Tuesday, only have 20 minutes, cable station busy: say it in Coach chat. Coach can move a workout, trim what's left of today's session, push an exercise to the end, or propose a new week.

  5. 05

    Call your coach

With Pro, tap the phone button in Coach chat, then Start voice call. Your coach answers out loud, with captions on screen.

The plan

What your four-week plan is built from

Handler builds the plan from your setup answers and your history: what you're training for, how long you've been lifting, which days you can train, the equipment you have, and any sets you've already logged. You get four weeks of workouts, each with exercises, sets, reps and rest. Nothing about it is locked: swap an exercise, move a day, or ask Coach to rework the week.

Illustration: goals, experience, schedule, equipment and logged sets go into a four-week plan; in chat you can ask Coach to move a workout, trim today's session or rebuild the week, which you confirm first; with Pro you can call your coach, with captions, for up to 10 minutes

Coach chat

What you can ask Coach to change

Coach chat in Handler works from your plan and the sets you've logged, so you can say what happened in plain words and get a change back. A week rebuild comes back as a proposal. Review the summary and confirm before it applies.

What Handler's Coach can change when you ask, and what stays put

I missed a workoutKeep it as your next workout, or move it to another dayWorkouts you've finished
Rebuild my weekPropose new dates for the rest of the week; you see “Proposed week rebuild” and confirm to applyWorkouts you've finished

Voice calls

Can you talk to an AI personal trainer?

Yes, in Handler with Pro. The call is a two-way conversation you start from Coach chat. Ask about a swap between sets or how to fit a short session, and your coach answers out loud, with captions on screen. It's a call, not a voice reading your chat back, and it doesn't count your reps for you. Your coach style comes along: a Savage call sounds like Savage.

In the gym

When the session doesn't go to plan

Each of these has its own page with the steps, the numbers and the limits.

Set two felt too easy, or too heavy

Rate it Too Easy, Solid, Hard But Good or Maxed Out, and Effort Check suggests a new target for the sets you have left.

Effort Check

The rack or bench is taken

Mark it busy. At a saved location, Handler swaps exercises you haven't started for ones with the same movement pattern.

Busy equipment swaps

You only have 10 minutes

Quick Gym gives you a 7, 10 or 15-minute workout for where you're training: a big gym, a small one, home, a hotel, or no equipment.

Quick Gym

You want to be pushed, or left alone

Pick Chill, Hype, Direct or Savage, with Marcus or Sarah as your coach. Switch any time in Settings under Trainer preference.

Limits

What Handler's coach won't do

  • It can't watch your form or spot you. It works from what you log and what you tell it.
  • An active plan is kept rather than rebuilt, and a missed workout doesn't reshuffle your week on its own. Ask Coach when you want that.
  • Coach style changes the wording, not your plan, targets or safety rules.
  • Voice calls need Handler Pro and your consent to AI processing. Each call stops at 10 minutes and ends if you leave the app.
  • Offline logging hasn't been independently tested; coach chat and calls need a connection.
  • It's training guidance, not medical care. It doesn't diagnose pain.

Other ways to do this

Other ways to get a plan and a coach

An app isn't the only way to get coached, and Handler isn't the only app that plans. US prices checked October 30, 2026.

Fitbod

Builds each workout from your equipment, recent training and muscle recovery, and you can replace an exercise with a swipe. $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year in the US, with a 7-day trial.

Fitbod: how to subscribe

Hevy Trainer

Part of Hevy Pro. Trainer writes a program from your goals, experience, equipment and schedule, then adjusts working weights from what you log. Hevy Pro is $2.99 a month or $23.99 a year in the US.

Hevy: workout plan generator

A human coach

A coach watches your reps, fixes your setup and spots you on a heavy bench. If form is what's holding you back, a few sessions with one will do more than any app.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an AI personal trainer app that plans your workouts?

Yes. Handler writes a four-week strength plan from your goals, experience, schedule, equipment and training history, then logs your sets as you go. It's $79.99/year in the US, with 7 days free for new iPhone subscribers and no free version. Fitbod builds each workout on the day instead ($15.99/month or $95.99/year), and Hevy Pro's Trainer writes a program and adjusts weights from what you log ($2.99/month or $23.99/year).

Can I talk to my AI coach out loud?

With Handler Pro, yes. Open Coach chat, tap the phone button, then tap Start voice call. It's a two-way call with captions, up to 10 minutes, and your coach style comes along.

What happens if I miss a workout?

Nothing moves on its own. The workout you missed stays your next one, even after its date passes. If you want the week reshuffled, ask Coach: it proposes new dates for the rest of the week, and nothing changes until you confirm.

Can an AI coach replace a personal trainer?

No. Handler can't watch your form, fix your setup or spot you. It covers the work around that: the plan, the log, and changing a session when the day doesn't go to plan.
