What this page is: structured data from Handler's own exercise library — the same cues, mistakes, ranges, and modifications the coach uses in the app. It is general exercise information, not an individual technique assessment or medical advice. Stop any movement that causes pain and seek qualified coaching or clinical care for injuries.

Technique

Form cues for the romanian deadlift

  1. 01

Hinge at the hips by pushing your butt straight back.

  2. 02

Keep a slight bend in your knees — they should not travel forward.

  3. 03

Lower the bar until you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings, then drive hips forward.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees too much and turning it into a squat.

  • Rounding the upper back under load.

  • Going too low past the point of hamstring flexibility.

Programming defaults

Sets, reps, and rest by goal

These are the starting ranges Handler's library assigns to the romanian deadlift for each training goal. They are defaults the coach adjusts from your logged sets, not a prescription for any individual.

Between sets

  • Lightly stretch your hamstrings between sets while they are warm.
  • Focus on squeezing your glutes at lockout on the next set.

Questions about this exercise

What muscles does the romanian deadlift work?
The romanian deadlift primarily works the hamstrings and glutes. The lower back, core and forearms work as secondary or stabilising muscles. In Handler's library it is classified as a hip hinge movement.
What equipment do you need for the romanian deadlift?
You need barbell. It is programmed in commercial gym, small gym, home gym setups where that equipment is available.
How many sets and reps of the romanian deadlift should I do?
Handler's default for a strength focus is 4 × 5–8 reps with about 2 min 30 s rest, and for a muscle-building focus 3 × 8–12 reps with about 1 min 30 s rest. These are the library's starting ranges, not an individual prescription; the coach adjusts them from what you log.
Is the romanian deadlift suitable for beginners?
It is tagged intermediate. A simpler starting point in the same progression chain is the dumbbell romanian deadlift.
