Workout app buying guide

The best offline workout tracker apps

Short answer

Fitbod's offline help describes local workout generation and logging, with limits for Focus Exercises, some history, and uncached videos. Hevy advertises offline workouts in its watch feature section. Strong documents watch logging without the iPhone, which does not by itself establish network-offline behavior. We have not run a comparative no-signal test; Handler's own offline workflow remains under private-beta testing.

About this guide

Offline generation, saved logging, and phone-free watch use are different promises. Compare what each app documents and what still needs a trial on your device.

These are documentation-based recommendations, not hands-on or multi-week test results. The guide's recorded date is June 24, 2026; it does not establish when each source was verified. Check the linked official pages for current prices and plan limits before subscribing.

Fitbod's specific offline help describes local generation and logging with connected-feature limits. Hevy advertises offline workouts in its watch section, while Strong describes watch logging without the phone. These statements support different conclusions, not a universal reliability ranking. This article does not claim a historical test or a guarantee against data loss.

Start with the job you need the app to do, then use the full reviews below to check the trade-offs. A manual logger, an AI coach, and a program library can all be good workout apps, but they solve different problems.

The picks, explained

Documented offline generation and logging

1. Fitbod

Fitbod's specific offline help describes local generation, logging, and saving. That is more useful evidence than assuming a simple interface must work without internet.

Best for

generated workouts around your available equipment

Not for

people who only need a free manual logbook or want a demonstrated conversational workflow

Fitbod offline help and Fitbod subscription help

Fitbod offers a watch companion, but its offline-help statements are not a device-by-device reliability test. Check the exact phone and watch actions you need before leaving a connection behind.

Fitbod says its local algorithm can generate workouts offline and that logged data stays on the device until it can sync. Previously cached media may be available. Its Focus Exercises feature needs a connection to follow the expected split, while some history and uncached videos also need internet. Reconnect and sync before deleting the app.

Offline generation does not guarantee that a proposed workout follows the split you expected. Compare a generated session with your intended plan, particularly when using connection-dependent Focus Exercises.

Fitbod's subscription help lists US monthly and annual plans and a seven-day trial after choosing a plan. Verify your current offer before paying; offline support is not an ongoing free-tier promise.

Why not ranked higher: Some split, history, and media features still need a connection. We have not tested persistence, recovery after a restart, or later syncing on your device.

Example workout decision: For a trial, prepare a disposable session, disconnect, generate and edit it, then reconnect and confirm the saved record. This is a suggested check, not a test result from this publisher.

Bottom line: Investigate Fitbod when local workout proposals matter, and test the documented connected-feature limits before depending on it in a no-signal gym.

Evidence

Fitbod's dedicated offline help is the source for these capability and limitation descriptions. Store availability alone does not establish them.

Best simple offline-friendly logger

2. Hevy

Hevy is worth investigating for free logging and documented watch-workout features, with offline wording on its official site. That is not evidence that every action works disconnected.

Best for

lifters who want free social logging or paid Pro Trainer planning

Not for

people who want Trainer-level planning and progression without a Pro subscription

Product references

Hevy official site and Hevy Trainer announcement

Hevy documents routines, set logging, timers, and history. Its official watch section advertises offline workouts. Try the exact start, edit, finish, and reconnect sequence; we have not measured speed or persistence.

For this guide, Hevy is treated as an offline-friendly manual tracker with current official support: its official site lists Apple Watch, Wear OS, and Workout Offline, and Google Play describes Wear OS tracking with phone sync. That still does not mean every social, account, media, or sync feature works without internet.

Hevy Trainer adds documented program generation and automatic weight adjustments in Pro. The site's offline watch wording does not establish which Trainer actions work without a connection.

Hevy offers free logging with limits and a paid Pro tier. Check your current local offer and the specific features it includes; this guide does not assert exact free-tier limits or one universal Pro price.

Why not ranked higher: Do not extend an offline-workout statement to social, account, media, or Trainer features without checking them individually.

Example workout decision: A typical Hevy use case is running your own push/pull/legs routine, logging each set quickly in a low-signal gym, and checking charts later to decide your next jump.

Bottom line: Shortlist Hevy for its documented logging and offline watch wording, then verify the actual disconnected workflow on your device.

Evidence

Hevy's official watch section contains offline-workout wording. We have not performed or adopted a third-party no-signal test as proof of reliability.

Phone-independent watch logging

3. Strong

Strong documents watch logging with or without an iPhone. That makes it relevant to phone-free use, but a separate network-offline check is still needed.

Best for

lifters who want to record an existing routine

Not for

beginners who need the app to make programming decisions

Strong official site and Strong App Store

Strong's published features include routines, timers, history, and Apple Watch logging. We have not measured whether its watch flow is faster or more reliable than another app's.

Phone-free and network-offline are different. Strong's US App Store listing says watch logging can work without the iPhone, but that alone does not establish behavior without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Test saving and later syncing under the conditions you need.

Strong documents saved routines and logging. Automated load, volume, and exercise decisions are not established by the linked descriptions; inspect programming guidance separately if that is your requirement.

Strong's US App Store description lists unlimited free workouts, three custom routines, and Pro at $4.99/month or $29.99/year. Confirm your local offer; these descriptions do not establish an offline test date.

Why not ranked higher: Beginners and lifters who want guidance may find Strong too quiet. It is excellent as a logbook, not as a coach.

Example workout decision: A typical Strong user has a known upper/lower split, wants set entry and rest timers to work without fuss, and does not need the app to explain what to do next.

Bottom line: Consider Strong for phone-free watch logging, but do not treat this page as proof of network-offline reliability.

Table values are category-level summaries. "Limited" means the sources for this guide show a limited, indirect, phone-first, or lighter workflow rather than a complete Apple Watch, offline, or coaching workflow. Offline descriptions are documentation summaries, not results of our own connectivity tests. Confirm whether a workout must be loaded in advance, whether it can be saved without a signal, and how it syncs afterward before relying on an app at a no-signal gym.

Other apps we considered

These apps may still be worth checking if your needs are narrower, but they were not the top picks for this specific strength-training use case.

JEFIT

large exercise database and analytics

Its documented exercise library and analytics may be relevant, but this guide does not establish its disconnected workflow or comparative usability.

StrengthLog

free strength-focused logging

A strength-logging alternative with free features. This guide does not establish device-specific offline saving and recovery behavior or rank its reliability against Hevy or Strong.

How we picked

This is a documentation-based comparison, not a completed no-signal test. Distinguish local generation, saved logging, cached media, phone-free watch use, and later synchronization. For a trial, use disposable data to check the specific actions you need while disconnected, then reconnect and confirm the saved record before depending on the app.

For strength training, compare the documented program tools, progression options, equipment choices, wearable support, and plan limits first. Calorie tracking or a large exercise library will not replace a missing program feature you need each week.

We also separate app types before ranking them. A free logbook can be the right answer for someone who already has a program, while a coaching app is a better answer for someone who wants the plan built and adjusted. The goal is not to crown one app for everyone; it is to make the use case obvious enough that a reader can choose quickly.

The order reflects our judgment of documented features for this training need, not measured performance or a numerical rating. Handler is our own private-beta product and is excluded from the public shortlist and comparison table.

Who this guide is for

People choosing a first app

You want to avoid downloading five trackers and need a plain answer about which app fits your training style, budget, and equipment.

Lifters switching tools

You already train consistently, but your current app is too limited, too expensive, or not helpful enough with progression.

People comparing app categories

You are deciding whether you need a manual logger, generated workouts, a program library, or a coach-like product that changes the plan over time.

Before you commit to an app

During a free tier or trial, enter a familiar workout, log a few sets, and find them in your history. Check whether the program tools you need are included in that tier and whether you can change a suggested exercise or weight.

For watch or offline use, try the exact phone-and-watch setup you train with before taking it to the gym. A documented feature is a reason to shortlist an app, not proof that it will work reliably in your setup. Keep your existing log until you know how to export or recover your history.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best offline workout tracker?
Fitbod documents local generation, logging, saving, and later sync with connected-feature limits. Hevy advertises offline watch workouts; Boostcamp's store description also documents offline use. Strong's phone-free watch wording alone does not prove network-offline operation. Handler remains a private-beta preview. No comparative reliability test is claimed.
Do workout tracker apps work without internet?
Some do, but the quality varies. The best offline trackers let you open or prepare routines, log sets, edit mistakes, use rest timers, and sync later without losing the session. Social feeds, media, account changes, generated recommendations, and cloud history often still need a connection.
Why does offline workout tracking matter?
Many gyms have poor signal. If your workout app depends on a live connection for basic logging, it can slow down the session exactly when you need it to be invisible.
