Lateral Raise
Lateral Raise is a beginner isolation exercise that primarily trains the side delts, with the front delts and traps assisting. Equipment: dumbbell.
What this page is: structured data from Handler's own exercise library — the same cues, mistakes, ranges, and modifications the coach uses in the app. It is general exercise information, not an individual technique assessment or medical advice. Stop any movement that causes pain and seek qualified coaching or clinical care for injuries.
Technique
Form cues for the lateral raise
- 01
Raise the dumbbells out to the sides until your arms are parallel to the floor.
- 02
Lead with your elbows, not your hands — think about pouring water from a pitcher.
- 03
Use a slight bend in your elbows and keep it consistent throughout.
Troubleshooting
Common mistakes
Using too much weight and swinging the dumbbells.
Shrugging the traps instead of isolating the side delts.
Raising the arms too high above shoulder level.
Programming defaults
Sets, reps, and rest by goal
These are the starting ranges Handler's library assigns to the lateral raise for each training goal. They are defaults the coach adjusts from your logged sets, not a prescription for any individual.
| Goal | Sets × reps | Rest between sets |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 3 × 8–10 reps | 1 min 30 s |
| Hypertrophy | 4 × 12–20 reps | 1 min |
| Fat loss | 3 × 15–20 reps | 45 s |
| General fitness | 3 × 12–15 reps | 1 min |
Between sets
- These respond well to shorter rest — stay disciplined on the clock.
- Roll your shoulders backward to reset your posture before the next set.
Working around discomfort
Modifications by body area
How Handler adjusts the lateral raise when a lifter reports a sensitive area. These are training modifications, not treatment. Pain that persists or worsens needs clinical assessment.
- Shoulder
- Raise to only 60 degrees instead of 90, or use cables for a smoother resistance curve.
- Wrist
- Use a neutral thumbs-up grip instead of a pinkies-up position.
