Marching Intervals
Marching Intervals is a beginner cardio exercise that primarily trains the hip flexors and calves, with the core assisting. Equipment: bodyweight.
What this page is: structured data from Handler's own exercise library — the same cues, mistakes, ranges, and modifications the coach uses in the app. It is general exercise information, not an individual technique assessment or medical advice. Stop any movement that causes pain and seek qualified coaching or clinical care for injuries.
Technique
Form cues for the marching intervals
- 01
Set the intensity so you can match the target RPE for the full block.
- 02
Keep your posture tall and your breathing rhythmic.
- 03
Adjust speed, incline, resistance, or cadence before form breaks.
- 04
Raise knees and pump arms for work blocks, then slow the march to recover.
Troubleshooting
Common mistakes
Starting above the target RPE.
Letting posture collapse as fatigue builds.
Ignoring the recovery pace on intervals.
Programming defaults
Sets, seconds, and rest by goal
These are the starting ranges Handler's library assigns to the marching intervals for each training goal. They are defaults the coach adjusts from your logged sets, not a prescription for any individual.
| Goal | Sets × seconds | Rest between sets |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 6 × 20–40 s | 1 min 20 s |
| Hypertrophy | 8 × 20–45 s | 1 min |
| Fat loss | 10 × 30–60 s | 45 s |
| General fitness | 6 × 30–60 s | 1 min |
Between sets
- Let your breathing come down before the next interval.
- Use the recovery pace on purpose.
Working around discomfort
Modifications by body area
How Handler adjusts the marching intervals when a lifter reports a sensitive area. These are training modifications, not treatment. Pain that persists or worsens needs clinical assessment.
- Hip
- Use a comfortable stance and shorten the range if the front of the hip pinches.
- Knee
- Shorten the range, keep the knee tracking over the toes, and use a controlled tempo.
- Ankle
- Limit jump height or depth and keep landings quiet and stacked.
