Pull-Up
Pull-Up is an advanced vertical pull exercise that primarily trains the lats and upper back, with the biceps, forearms and core assisting. Equipment: pull-up bar.
What this page is: structured data from Handler's own exercise library — the same cues, mistakes, ranges, and modifications the coach uses in the app. It is general exercise information, not an individual technique assessment or medical advice. Stop any movement that causes pain and seek qualified coaching or clinical care for injuries.
Technique
Form cues for the pull-up
- 01
Start each rep from active shoulders, not a loose hang.
- 02
Start by pulling the shoulder blades down away from the ears.
- 03
Drive the elbows toward your ribs instead of yanking with the hands.
- 04
Control the return until the arms are long again.
- 05
Pull until the chin clears the bar without reaching the neck forward.
Troubleshooting
Common mistakes
Pulling with the neck and upper traps.
Kipping when the set should be strict.
Stopping short of full control at the top.
Programming defaults
Sets, reps, and rest by goal
These are the starting ranges Handler's library assigns to the pull-up for each training goal. They are defaults the coach adjusts from your logged sets, not a prescription for any individual.
| Goal | Sets × reps | Rest between sets |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 5 × 3–6 reps | 3 min |
| Hypertrophy | 4 × 6–10 reps | 1 min 30 s |
| Fat loss | 3 × 10–15 reps | 1 min |
| General fitness | 3 × 6–10 reps | 1 min 30 s |
Between sets
- Let the lats relax, then start the next set by pulling shoulders down.
- Keep the next set strict before adding reps.
Working around discomfort
Modifications by body area
How Handler adjusts the pull-up when a lifter reports a sensitive area. These are training modifications, not treatment. Pain that persists or worsens needs clinical assessment.
- Shoulder
- Use a pain-free range and keep the upper arm path controlled.
- Elbow
- Use a softer lockout and stop before elbow discomfort changes your tempo.
- Wrist
- Use a neutral wrist position or reduce loading until the wrist stays quiet.
