Weighted Plank
Weighted Plank is an advanced core exercise that primarily trains the core, with the shoulders and glutes assisting. Equipment: dumbbell.
What this page is: structured data from Handler's own exercise library — the same cues, mistakes, ranges, and modifications the coach uses in the app. It is general exercise information, not an individual technique assessment or medical advice. Stop any movement that causes pain and seek qualified coaching or clinical care for injuries.
Technique
Form cues for the weighted plank
- 01
Squeeze glutes and pull elbows toward toes without moving them.
- 02
Exhale gently to set your ribs down before each rep or hold.
- 03
Brace like you are about to be bumped from the side.
- 04
Move slowly enough that your low back position does not change.
- 05
Place the load over the upper back and keep the plank shape unchanged.
Troubleshooting
Common mistakes
Holding your breath the entire time.
Letting the low back arch.
Moving faster than you can brace.
Programming defaults
Sets, seconds, and rest by goal
These are the starting ranges Handler's library assigns to the weighted plank for each training goal. They are defaults the coach adjusts from your logged sets, not a prescription for any individual.
| Goal | Sets × seconds | Rest between sets |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 4 × 30–45 s | 2 min |
| Hypertrophy | 3 × 40–60 s | 1 min 15 s |
| Fat loss | 4 × 30–60 s | 45 s |
| General fitness | 3 × 30–45 s | 1 min |
Between sets
- Quality bracing beats longer sloppy holds.
- Stand up or breathe tall between sets.
Working around discomfort
Modifications by body area
How Handler adjusts the weighted plank when a lifter reports a sensitive area. These are training modifications, not treatment. Pain that persists or worsens needs clinical assessment.
- Lower back
- Reduce load, brace before each rep, and stop if you cannot keep a neutral spine.
- Shoulder
- Use a pain-free range and keep the upper arm path controlled.
