RIR (Reps in Reserve) estimates how many more good reps you could have completed at the end of a set before reaching failure. If you stop a set and could have done two more clean reps, that set was about 2 RIR. It is closely related to RPE: 2 RIR is roughly RPE 8, and 0 RIR is roughly RPE 10.

RIR is a beginner-friendly way to talk about intensity because it asks a concrete question: how many more reps could you have done? The question is concrete, but estimating the answer still takes practice.

Most of your sets should leave some room in the tank. Training to failure can be useful, but doing it constantly can add fatigue that makes the next lift or next session worse.

RIR counts down from the number of reps left. RPE counts up based on how hard the set felt. They are not perfectly interchangeable, but the table is a useful training shorthand. Neither rating alone establishes how well you will recover or repeat the set; exercise choice, total workload, and individual circumstances also matter.

Beginner example: if you planned 10 reps but could have done 12 with clean form, log the set as about 2 RIR.

RIR can be uncertain even when you report it honestly. Beginners can overestimate or underestimate remaining reps. Practice with comparable sets may help; video can check technique and tempo, but a smooth or slow rep does not establish an exact RIR across different loads, exercises, or intended tempos.

What the research suggests

The evidence around proximity to failure is more nuanced than “always train to failure” or “never train to failure.” Training close enough to failure matters, especially for hypertrophy, but constant failure is not automatically better and can create more fatigue. That is why many coaching systems use RIR to keep most hard work productive without turning every set into a max test.

The abstract of the 2024 meta-regression analysis, available through Europe PMC’s PubMed record, reports different patterns by goal: hypertrophy tended to improve closer to failure, whereas strength gains were similar across a wider RIR range. Because RIR was estimated from study descriptions, the authors caution against treating this exploratory analysis as an exact target for every exercise.

For strength work, leaving reps in reserve is especially useful on heavy compound lifts. Better technique, more repeatable practice, and lower fatigue often matter more than proving you can grind one extra rep.
